Maki Oh’s SS14 Collection at Lagos Fashion & Design Week Day 4, was nothing short of stunning. The collection titled ‘Iya-Ile’ presented her story of ‘women’s confusion about their place in society’ through her trademark motifs and symbols using adire, beautifully masked with sheer fabrics. The collection featured lovely mash ups combining masculine shapes and feminine silhouettes, where looks reinterpreted sports wear jerseys, tailored workwear, to domestic uniform references in apron shapes, garnished with traditional kitchen utensils. There are a number of elements to admire in this collection from the 1920s jazz inspired flapper numbers, rouged sleeves, the rich colour palette of blood red and emerald green, pretty polka dot ensembles, home grown prints, to the mesh square hats all showing her exceptional craftsmanship in merging the traditional with the contemporary, challenging its viewer and wearer to look back and beyond.
